Permethrin is a synthetic insecticide that is a replica of the natural insecticide pyrethrum, which is derived from the flowers of the daisy chrysanthemum. It was developed and tested by the U.S. military for use on uniforms, utilizing the same active ingredient found in hair shampoos for head lice. When applied to clothing, bed nets, tents, or gear, the treated fabric repels or kills biting insects, including mosquitoes that may carry West Nile virus, Yellow Fever, or Malaria, as well as ticks that may carry Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

The unique feature of Permethrin is that once it dries, it bonds to the cloth fiber or mesh netting, rendering it odorless and non-staining. Furthermore, Permethrin is water-based, biodegradable, and virtually non-toxic to humans, with no reported systemic effects.

For maximum protection against disease-causing mosquitoes and ticks, Permethrin-treated clothing can be used in conjunction with a DEET insect repellent on exposed skin, providing nearly 100% protection.
